Saving with the press of a key

In this tutorial we are going to save the map by using a key on the keyboard. Below is a map to download for you to test this on. The good news is that the Kismet commands have already been created.

DOWNLOAD:: Button_key_save.udk (The Ultimate save system must be installed)

This map has four rooms with different colours.  Try walking into the different rooms and save then exit or select one of the options and see how it works.

STEP ONE

In this tutorial there are four rooms with different colours. You are given 5 options.

  • Press H to reload map

  • Press R to delete save files

  • Press ESCAPE to save and exit

  • Press Q to save position

  • Press C to exit without saving

If you exit and restart the map, depending on what choice you made, this choice will load.

What you will see in this tutorial is the most easiest way to get certain events to happen. Once you understand how this works you will be able to make more complex commands/sequences.

STEP TWO

Locate the directory:

C:\UDK\UDK-2013-07\UDKGame\Content\Maps

(Example only)

Copy or paste the file downloadable above in the Maps folder.

Read what each keyboard command does and spend some time playing around with them. If you select "Play from here" the Keyboard command "Press H to reload map" will not work so proper testing will require you to select "Play"-"On PC"

STEP THREE

Start UDK, locate and load the map:

" Button_key_save"

Select "Play" - "on PC' (Do not choose "Play from here" otherwise some commands/sequences will not work.

Walk over to a coloured room in the map and save your position by pressing "escape". When you restart the map you will be in the coloured room.

Walk over to another coloured room and press "C". When you reload you will be in the same room you were last at and nothing was saved.

Press "R" and exit the map by pressing "C" then restart, you will be back at the start of the map.

Find some time to play around for a while and see how each command works.

STEP FOUR

Exit map and start up Kismet.

Take a look at the Kismet Widgets here. I have written comments with the Widgets so you can understand them.

Below is an image of the Kismet command "Key/Button Pressed" To change the Keyboard key delete H and put your own in. To have multiple keys, click the green + sign and add extra digits or alphabet commands.

If you click here this site has all the commands for the keyboard:

Have fun!!
